For some people, the rare instance of meeting their soulmate in public — as opposed to a dating website — is a moment to brag about. But for Modern Family‘s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, meeting his husband Justin Mikita at a gym was a strange scenario, so they retold their encounter with a more conventional love story.
The 38-year-old, who recently celebrated his one-year anniversary with Justin, phoned in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday and explained why he and his husband tell everyone they met through “mutual friends.”
“I feel like people’s minds go to a naughty place. It actually was [even] in the locker room at the gym. We were both fully clothed, I will say that,” Jesse confesses. “I feel like people’s eyebrows would kind of go up when, you know, I would say that we met at the gym.”
When Ellen K. asked, “Was it love at first sight,” the Emmy-nominated actor — who is considered for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series — reveals, “He is very, very attractive. So that right there was love at first sight.”
Now that Jesse has found the love of his life, the 38-year-old decided to research his ancestral lineage for an episode of TLC’s genealogy documentary, Who Do You Think You Are?
“They basically trace your ancestry and take you on a little adventure to learn about your roots,” he explained. “I learned that there was a little murder in my history, there’s a little bit of a gold rush, and there’s a little bit of embezzlement.”
An all-new season of Modern Family kicks off on September 24, but fans can watch Jesse’s episode of Who Do You Think You Are? on Wednesday at 9/8c on TLC.
