9-Year-Old Uses Allowance To Pay Off Lunch Debt For Third Grade Class

9-year-old boy in California is making his way into everyone's hearts after he used his allowance to pay off his classmates' lunch debt.

Ryan Kirkpatrick of West Park Elementary School in Napa has used his allowance to help out his third grade classmates. After having a conversation with his mom about kids that can't afford their school lunches, he decided to do something about it. His mother called the schoo to find out how much his third-grade class owed in unpaid lunch debt.

"I think it was $74.50," Kylie told KGO-TV. "So, I took that email and came to Ryan and said, 'What do you want to do.' He said, 'I guess I can pay for it.' I said, 'Are you sure?' And he said, 'Yes.'"

School lunch prices range anywhere from 30 cents to $3.25, depending on family income. However, the school says students WILL receive a hot meal even if they have a negative lunch balance.

"I want them to realize that people actually think about them," says Ryan. "I want them to feel happy someone cares about them."
