Over the last week, Shawn Mendes has been teasing new music, ultimately revealing the name of his brand new single, "In My Blood." And now, the full song has finally arrived!
"In My Blood" is the very first taste of Shawn's upcoming, highly anticipated third studio album. The song was co-produced by Shawn himself and Teddy Geiger (who has worked with Shawn on his previous albums), and co-written by both, along with longtime collaborators Scott Harris and Geoff Warburton.
Shawn's new anthem is all about having the will power to overcome any obstacle, especially when you feel like it's impossible. This is the most vulnerable that Shawn has ever been in his music, and the 19-year-old sings lyrics like, "Sometimes I feel like giving up/But I just can't, it isn't in my blood/It isn't in my blood."
In a note to fans just before the song's release, Shawn wrote on Instagram, "Just wanted to write this note before the song comes out tonight and say how excited I am for you all to hear it. I know I've been pretty quiet during this album process, and I just wanted to thank you with all of my heart for being there and supporting me the entire time. This song is the closest song to my heart that I've ever written, and I hope you guys love it, and all the new music coming your way."
"In My Blood" is not only the first single from Shawn's forthcoming new album, it's also the first new music fans have heard since his triple Platinum certified hit "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back," which was released back in April 2017. And it's safe to say that after hearing "In My Blood," there was nothing holding Shawn back in the studio this time, either.
While "In My Blood" is only an appetizer of what's to come from Shawn's third LP, the Canadian singer/songwriter has been teasing the project here and there on social media. In mid February, Shawn had tweeted how hard he's been working on the LP and how excited he is for fans to hear it. He wrote, "Really love you guys. Excited for you to hear all the new music. Feels like its been forever working on it, put all i have into this album. Hang in there just a little longer x."
And in the very beginning of February, after a fan had asked Shawn to divulge any information he could on the record, he replied with some lyrics, presumably from SM3. "You're perfectly wrong for me, thats why its so hard to leave," he replied.
Shawn's third studio album follows his previous two records, 2015's Handwritten and 2016's Illuminate.
