Cyndi here! Erika and I have a tradition of spending Fourth of July in the great outdoors, and this year we drove up to Prescott, AZ to do some camping.
The start was not as smooth as we were going for- we pulled up to our first campsite near Watson Lake, and it was right off the road- not in the wilderness at all! Definitely not where we wanted to be to escape.
We headed off to Lynx Lake campground, about 20 minutes away. Luckily they had a few spots open, but we did have to move campsites each night. Totally worth it to actually be in the wilderness though!
Prescott is a great hiking spot! Here are three great hikes we did while we were there.
1. Lynx Lake- At only 2.5 miles all the way around the lake, this makes a great easy hike for all ages. We packed some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to snack on while taking in the gorgeous views.
2. The Granite Dells at Watson Lake- We went back to our original campsite to check out the sites. What a different landscape compared to Lynx Lake! It's almost like you are on a different planet. The trail we chose intersects with a Frisbee golf course. It's a little more challenging than Lynx, but still very doable.
3. Thumb Butte- This trail is like the Tumamoc of Prescott. It's about 2 miles round trip, and it takes about an hour to do the whole thing. We got there just in time to catch the sunset from the top of the trail. It was STUNNING. They have placed a memorial at the top of the trail to honor the 19 fallen firefighters (pictured below). It was a beautiful tribute to those heroes.
Not to mention all the great food and drink in Prescott too! We got pizza at Rosas, tried all kinds of mead at Superstition Meadery, and had a cocktail at an old saloon on Whiskey Row.
You should probably make Prescott your next weekend road trip too. If you want more specifics about trails, food, or camping, shoot me a message on instagram! @cyndila
